On January 13, 2007, despite the biting wing and cold
temperatures, a group of volunteers gathered
near "Selfreliance" ("Samopomich"), which
graciously allows the uses of one of its
buildings for storage of collected items to be
sent to Ukraine. The hardy group managed to pack
and load over 600 boxes of humanitarian
assistance items to Ukraine. After three hours
of work, the task was completed and the
volunteers were rewarded with a well-earned
lunch, provided with the compliments of "Selfreliance."
These dedicated individuals were: Rev. Mykhaylo
Melnyk, Lubomyr and Halia Boryslavsky, Taras
Vasylyk, Taras Dubyk, Lesia Kapustianska,
Yaroslav Kupchak, Roman Rad, Mykhaylo and Halia
Uhryn, Yuriy Soroka and Roman Yatskovsky.
This particular relief effort is being directed to several
orphanages and boarding homes in western
Ukraine. It is already the sixth container being
sent to Ukraine by the "new wave" immigrants in
the Chicago area, with the broad-based
assistance of the entire Ukrainian American
community. The last two containers were
specifically organized and sent by the "Orange
wave" organization. Their rewards are the
letters of gratitude from the orphans in Ukraine
who received clothing, shoes and other supplies
from their brethren in Chicago. In one of the
letters, in a simple but moving poem entitled "A
thank you to the people of Chicago," the orphans
promise not to forget their benefactors and
beseech God to bestow his graces upon them.
