UUARC's
Farm Aid program addresses two issues
vital to the Ukrainian populace: the
issue of feeding the people and the
issue of fiscal independence. While
charity is a necessary method of helping
an emergent nation, inherent in the
process is the risk of "welfare
mentality". Self-sustaining
programs are the antidote! The Land
Fund, such as the one previously created
and implemented in Brazil, provides an
initial capital investment, which
ultimately acquires its own momentum and
sustains itself.
We
feel that it is imperative to rejuvenate
the agrarian benefits of the former
"breadbasket of Europe", using
the existing natural resources and the
budding entrepreneurial spirit. Based on
this premise, we have researched the
areas in Western Ukraine where there is
very little in the way of industry, and
the land lies fallow, and have selected
three villages where there is sufficient
land and work-force available, and we
are forming trial farm co-operatives.
