For more than 80 years, shipping humanitarian aid to Ukraine has been one of UUARC’s largest and most consistent relief efforts.

Beginning with packages sent to Ukrainians displaced by World War II, the program has expanded to include large shipping containers filled with medical equipment, medicine, food, clothing, shoes, educational materials, and other essential supplies.

The Container Program helps address shortages of basic necessities and provides additional support to Ukrainian communities where access to medical care, social services, and everyday essentials remains limited. Following Ukraine’s independence in 1991, the program expanded with funding from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). Over the years, UUARC has shipped more than 70 containers of humanitarian supplies to Ukraine, including containers measuring 20, 40, and 55 feet.

Much of this work is carried out by volunteers at UUARC’s Philadelphia headquarters, where donated goods are collected, sorted, packed, and prepared for shipment. Once the containers arrive in Ukraine, UUARC representatives and local volunteers coordinate the distribution of supplies to communities and organizations in need.

Since 2013, UUARC has covered the full cost of its container shipments through financial contributions from donors and supporters. Donations of goods are equally important, allowing the organization to continue providing practical assistance to Ukrainians who need it.
