The United Ukrainian American Relief Committee (UUARC) organizes summer camps for orphans and disadvantaged children throughout Ukraine.


This program provides opportunities for recreation, education, and time away from difficult living conditions. The program has served children in both Eastern and Western Ukraine, with UUARC’s Executive Board historically allocating approximately $8,000 to $19,000 annually to support the camps. UUARC also provides financial assistance to summer camps operated by the Ukrainian youth organizations CYM and Plast.


Organized by the director of UUARC’s Kyiv office, the camps typically welcome 30 to 90 children between the ages of 9 and 15 for an 18-day stay. Many participants have experienced poverty, abandonment, serious illness, or unstable living conditions. Among the children previously served were those who had been found living in abandoned doghouses before being taken in by families in the Luhansk region. Others arrived with health concerns, including compromised immune systems and pneumonia. Camps held near the sea provided opportunities for outdoor recreation and time in a coastal environment.


Camp activities include swimming, sports, and organized recreation, along with educational programs celebrating Ukrainian language, history, and culture. Counselors lead Taras Shevchenko poetry recitation contests and Ukrainian history competitions, giving children opportunities to learn about their heritage while developing friendships with other campers. Over the years, UUARC has received letters from participating children and counselors expressing their appreciation for the experience.

For more than 80 years, UUARC has provided humanitarian assistance to Ukrainians through donations, community partnerships, and volunteer efforts. Contributions to the UUARC General Fund help support programs that provide educational opportunities, recreation, and assistance to orphans and disadvantaged children throughout Ukraine.
